At drupa08, which is clearly dominated by German and Western European exhibitors, China, which was very visible in drupa04, will now be prominent. China itself occupies the seventh position (7,871 square meters) in terms of nations exhibiting and if all the Chinese entities of Hong Kong (273 square meters) and Taiwan (1859 square meters) are also included, these entities collectively surpass the long time leading Asian exhibitor Japan for sixth place. India, which two drupas ago had more space than China, is still at a respectable number 11 among the drupa exhibitors with a good increase in its space (2,410 square meters).

The Asian participation is also rising with the twelve nations’ exhibitors taking 21,816 square meters. This clearly gives Asia the silver medal behind the European gold and ahead of the North Americans who get a bronze as far as space booked at the drupa Olympics.

What will be the most significant among the Indian exhibitors? It will be the world class products based on global technologies such as TechNova’s violet CtP plates, a technology that they obtain as Agfa licensees. Other such products are ConDot’s specialty inkjet marking systems based on HP’s inkjet technology or the UV Ultracoat machine for coating and flexo printing that uses a defect detection system called PERFECTO designed together with BST Sayona India and Deco Systems srl, Italy. These products demonstrate the need for global technology products and collaborative efforts in order to grow.

Manugraph will exhibit the following in static condition:

Hiline --  a cost-effective model ideally suitable for medium to high circulation newspapers. At 45,000 cph, Hiline is the forerunner among single width, single circumference presses. Printing units are available as 4-Hi Towers, ‘H’ and arch modules all with standalone flying splicer and ‘I’ and ‘Y’ modules with integrated flying splicer. All modules can be mixed in a single pressline.

Hiline employs 2:2:2 / 2:3:2 jaw folders taking up to 12 webs. Maximum web width: 915 mm, and cut offs: 533, 546, 560 and 578mm. Hiline boasts motorised registration and cut off controls, pneumatics for engaging disengaging impression, inking and dampening, 9-roller inking and 4-roller brush dampening trains, a shaftless drive option, and remote ink-zone control system with CIP3 interface for ink key presetting. The ink duct and the pan roller are driven independently, both tracking the press speed. Quarter fold, double parallel fold, balloon former, bay window, and heatset drying are options.

Frontline -- With a maximum output of 60,000 cph and excellent price-performance ratio, Frontline is the speed leader among single width, single circumference presses and ideal for high-circulation newspapers. Printing units are available as 4-Hi Towers and H modules. Plate and blanket cylinders are mounted on 3-race bearings, retaining full bearer technology. Conventional rubber blankets are used. The 4-Hi tower is ideal for back-to-back 4-colour printing or can take 3 webs for single colour on both sides. The ‘H’ module can print a single web with 2 colours back to back, or 2 webs single colour on both sides.

Cityline Express --  is a 35,000 cph single width, single circumference press. Cityline is ideally suited for a wide gamut of applications such as newspapers, supplements, books, and magazines. Printing units are available as 4-Hi Towers with standalone reel stands and mono units with integrated reel stands. The reel stands are manually operated, with option of automatic flying splicer. Reel-stands can be kept inline, at right angles or stacked. All electricals are PLC based. Max web width is 915 mm. Available in 508, 533, 546, 560, 578 and 598 mm cut offs.

S16 -- With a speed of 40000 cph, S16 is a 16-page heatset press for commercial printing. A single circumference single width press employing state-of-the-art technology for quality commercial work.

Nitin Garg of NBG informed us: “We are showing a 4-Hi printing tower at Drupa, which will be on static display. The particular machine has got decent number of installations overseas. Paras are leading manufacturers and exporters of rubber printing rollers for sheet and web fed offset printing machines. They also refurbish rollers. Their new developments include rollers with non-extractable plasticisers, high-end antioxidants and rubber additives to prevent premature shrinking and hardening of rubber surfaces in addition to optimisation of functional parameters. Proteck will be showing its high speed offline coater, Tower Coater TC 105 which can coat using aqeous or UV varnish with a maximum sheet size of 28 x 40 inches and a maximum speed of 15,000 sheets an hour. It will also show the ST 104 screen-printing machine with in line UV dryer to do spot UV varnishes with a speed of 5000 sheets an hour. Apart from these it will show CtP processors for thermal and photopolymer plates.

TechNova will have its biggest stall at drupa 2008, measuring 217 square metres. TechNova will launch its VioStar range of violet CtP plates including VioStar N for newspapers and VioStar C for commercial and packaging printers. Technova will introduce its Thermostar Marathon at drupa. At drupa it will demonstrate its PoliJet, the no-process inkjet CtP system that uses a large-format inkjet printer and standard inkjet inks to image offset plates.

We met R P Singh, Deputy General Manager (Design and development) and L K Sharma, Chief General Manager of The Printers House and got to know that the fast growing company will be demonstrating their Orient X-Print-40 (40,000 cph) and Orient X-Print-50 (50,000 cph) printing machines.

U.V. Graphic Technologies Hall 6 / A12 
The Taj Mahal will once again be bought to Germany by UV Graphic Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The highlight will be on Spot UV Coating and silver scratch Coating. Abhay Datta of U V Graphic Technologies informed us, “We will be demonstrating our Ultracoat 1040 fully automatic spot UV coating machine which will be our 130th coater. We will give a live demonstration of fully automatic spot UV coating. The highlight will be the printing of high luster metallic Inks using the latest flexo technology. The machine will also be equipped with a 100  per cent defect detection system called PERFECTO designed together with BST Sayona India and Deco Systems srl, Italy. The system will segregate the good and bad sheets on line during coating as an added feature. Our partners for the show also include Schmid Rayner of Switzerland for UV and speciality coatings, Dupont Cyrel for polymer Plates, ITC Limited who have supplied the paper board and Seigwerk Germany who will supply the metallic Inks for the live demonstration of metallic ink printing.”
