Advertising revenues to increase, circulation relatively stable

Newspaper circulation world-wide fell just slightly in 2009 despite the economic downturn, and the impact of the global recession on newspaper advertising revenues appears to be easing, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) said on 04 August 2010 in its annual world press trends update. The report showed that, contrary to conventional wisdom, newspapers remain a large and thriving industry world-wide, despite the impact of the global recession and the rise of digital media. “Frankly, I have noticed a tendency amongst media journalists and commentators to dwell on the negative aspects of the business when it is clear there is much to be positive about,” said Christoph Riess, CEO of WAN-IFRA, who presented the report.
