An interim update from the IppStar Survey

As a part of its ongoing print industry research, IppStar tracks press installations in India, including digital production presses. Looking at the progress of digital printing in the country, IppStar estimates that installed base of digital production presses has continued to increase year on year by more than 30 per cent, with growth in both colour and black and white engines. However there is deep discord in the industry over how to define a ‘production’ press and whether it can be done by speed, duty cycle, quality or capital and consumable cost. There is also the problem of comparing engines with a wide variation in technologies that include the established drum and toner and ‘liquid ink,’ magnetography, and the various type of inkjets – thermal, piezo and CIJ inkjet which look extremely promising in the future. This is why the IppStar survey tends to quantify both press units as well as the Rs. value turnover generated in various segments.
