Management Information Systems (MIS), also referred to as Information Systems or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications, are business management systems that integrate data from all the departments in a company, and provide operations staff and management with the information required to effectively run the business. These applications attempt to integrate functions across a company into a single set of data that can serve each of the different departments’ specific requirements. Each department has its own interface with the application or set of applications, but the MIS combines them into a single, integrated information system running on a single database construction so that the various departments can more easily share information and communicate, and are working from consistent data. A Management Information System delivers real-time business information, rendering day-to-day as well as strategic decision-making more effective. Manual tracking processes and disconnected data gathering practices no longer meet these objectives. On the contrary, they make it increasingly difficult to see the big picture and acquire meaningful information in a timely manner. The absence of an integrated core of business information adversely impacts both the daily operations of the business and the identification and implementation of the incremental process improvements critical in an increasingly competitive environment. ...cont´d
