Bhutan’s media explosion

Government asks ABC for media audit

In Bhutan, two new periodicals have come up in the past few weeks. The Journalist is a 24-page Sunday newspaper with an initial print run of 5,000, while Drukpa is the country’s first monthly news magazine, starting out with a similar print run. Prior to these launches, Bhutan counted five newspapers, of which four were established in just the past four years: the weeklies Bhutan Observer, Bhutan Times and Business Bhutan, and the daily Bhutan Today. Bhutan’s oldest newspaper Kuensel, was a weekly till 2005, then was published twice a week, and since April 2009 became a daily. All the periodicals are independent from each other and have a main edition in English and a thinner edition in Bhutan’s national language, Dzongkha, or have single bilingual editions in English and Dzongkha pages. ...cont´d
