Commercial printing in Chennai seems to have taken a bit of a beating in the past few years, judging by what a couple of leading printers in the city told IPP. One of the reasons for some of the printing presses nursing a certain amount of apprehension, has been the “disappearance of a supposed volume” for which a leading multinational company (not in the printing business) had created capacity (for its captive needs), assuring Chennai-based printers business. Later, however, the company’s printing business was transferred to a pre-media, printing and logistics giant, another MNC. Things took a turn for the worse about three years ago for two Chennai-based printers when they were told their services were no longer required. They then decided to go through the legal route and claim damages. Another version is that the printers were not able to meet the consistent quality standards set by the MNC.
