The newspaper market could be described as the goose that lays the golden egg for consumables suppliers — it’s high volume, regular, relatively stable and far from impoverished despite the threnody. However this market offers suppliers of direct to plate technologies an interesting conundrum. Counterbalancing morose predictions that newspapers have had their day is the fact that there are still over 18,000 printed newspaper titles in the world, only a handful of which have switched to computer to plate (CtP) output. According to the World Association of Newspapers, worldwide newspaper circulation is rising, up by 2.1 per cent in 2004, and ad revenues are making a comeback with ad expenditure rising by 5.4 per cent. Without doubt newspapers are under threat, but they are still gobbling printing plates remorselessly. So for suppliers, how much attention is it worth?
