Google’s Drummond comments on eBooks at WAN Hyderabad

December 08, 2009 | By Aakriti Agarwal

IPP spoke with Drummond in Hyderabad about Google’s tie-up with Sony’s eBook reader and Google eBooks in book stores. He responded, “Our model is that the reader can buy books from any place, anywhere and read them on any device. It’s an open system like android is for mobile phones. The strategy is to create a cloud model where the readers have books on cloud and book sellers, websites or book sites can be part of that model and get credit for selling google eBooks which currently is not the case in the current model with Kindle where book sellers do not get any credit. . . Our model is lots of sellers and any device. We don’t lock the user to one store or any one device… Sony should be competing on how good their device is.”

Concluding, Drummond said, “Work with us to build bigger audiences, to engage more deeply with your high value readers, to encourage them to spend more time with your content, and finally help them spin more money interacting with more valuable ads which we (Google) hopefully can help with.” He was confident that news through innovation, technology and partnership can endure with new found vitality and profitability and that there will be many answers. The answers, he said, “will be a combination of both free and paid content and I hope it’ll be with and not without or against google but that choice is again, yours.”
