The month of March saw the second Navayana annual lecture. Well-known activist and academic, Angela Davis, spoke to a packed hall at the Habitat Centre in Delhi about her work on prisons in the USA. Outside, a counter stacked with her books — locally reprinted under licence by Navayana — did brisk business. I spoke to a group of older activists in the hall while we were waiting for the event to start. Many of them were people who don’t have the time to come to book related events — they’re usually too busy working on the ground. “But we’re here for solidarity, for her and for the publisher,” they said. And each one had bought at least one of Davis’ books — “Once again for solidarity and I already have most of her books,” one of them added. ...cont´d
