IPEX 2010 Media Summit starts off over a pint or two

February 08, 2010 | By Fayez Ali

The Ipex International Media summit began in the London Docklands with a traditional very British pub quiz. Over pints of British bitter nearly 80 journalists from 38 countries, who collectively traveled a distance that can circle our tiny planet ten times.

  • Docklands, London

After everyone had ordered their drinks and were seated at their assigned tables, the quiz began. It was divided into two parts – one before the main course and one after. Each half had about 20 questions. The first half before dinner was all about general knowledge with questions like the first Guru of the Sikhs (they have ten), mostly teams with Indians got that one right. Others were the name of the book of Nostradamus in which he predicts the end of the world. Audio visual questions were there where three songs of three different decades were played simultaneously and we had to guess the first names of all the artists. A numeric puzzle, a portrait and the flag of landlocked mini country Lesotho which only my team and another were able to guess. Playing Geo games on facebook finally paid off.

While we were served dinner the first rounds, results were added up. IPP’s team was about the middle of the rung. After the main course of traditional English pub dinners of fish and chips, lamb stew and dumplings among other things we had the second round.

The second was the Ipex round. This was devised by Trevor Crawford and Nick Craig Weller. Here were questions like when did Ipex start, which company was Ipex bought from, its current owners, IIR exhibitions, what else do you find when you google Ipex. The years in which Ipex had a mascot experia, the year it shifted to Birmingham, the year it moved form autumn to spring, when was Indigo launched. Here my Russian team mate told me that Indigo was launched in 1993 and it was bought by HP in 2003 and they launched it in the same year – some questions which only seasoned journalists knew. Two questions were left to be judged by Trevor and Nick as to which are the funniest answers like where should Ipex be held.

All in all a very British start to the Ipex Media summit. Tomorrow starts the real show. I have already been provided my customized printed brochure for the Summit by Ipex printed by Canon. We await big news from them about their Oce acquisition. Keep lookin’ at IPP for more updates on the Ipex Media Summit and the Ipex Exhibition in Birmingham in May.
