India at the Frankfurt Book Fair

It’s been many years now that I have been going to the Frankfurt book fair. While the fair itself grows and improves and offers more and more things of interest to exhibitors and visitors, the Indian presence at the fair is not something that covers Indian publishing with glory. This is not to say we haven’t come a long way – we have. Since 1986 when India was the Guest of Honour for the first time, to 2006 when it became Guest of Honour for the second time, much has changed. The numbers of Indian publishers participating in the Frankfurt Book Fair and indeed in other international book related events has gone up consistently. Unlike in earlier days, these publishers do not only travel to pick up remaindered books for the Indian market. Instead, they buy and sell rights, they negotiate distribution deals for foreign publishers in India and Indian publishers abroad, they seek out authors, and they sell print services. ...cont´d
