Industrial forestry and government help with modernisation

While the Indian government has rejected the demands of the local paper mills to impose a safeguard customs duty directed at imports, the mills continue to improve quality with new machines and to enhance their environmently friendly practices. The main limitation to the efficienct manufacture of sustainable paper is the fibre shortage caused by the lack of an organised fibre and foresty industry in the country. The government is beginning to come round to the long propounded view that to some extent paper manufacturers could themselves manage sustainable and responsible forests, especially on what is described as ‘waste land.’ ...cont´d
