India’s book industry will be centre stage at LBF, as its Market Focusthis year. Following the success of the Arab World Market Focus in2008, this year’s scheme will take a fresh look at the commercialopportunities that contemporary India has to offer, while building onthe thriving trade and cultural relationship that already exists inparticular between India and the UK. The choice of India as MarketFocus country is particularly timely as the country is stillexperiencing relatively strong economic growth and offers a printingand publishing market full of opportunities. The size of the Indianbook market is estimated at Rs 10,000 crores (£1.3 billion), that isabout a third of the value of the UK’s book market. In 2007, India wasthe eighteenth largest market for UK book exports and was the ninthbiggest market for US book exports, and this market has been growing at10 per cent per year for the past decade or so.
