In a story circulated by the United News of India press service on 16 October, 2003, the newly elected President of the Indian Newspapers Society (INS) M P Veerendrakumar called for a national debate on the issue between the employees and owners of the newspaper industry. (The government has already allowed up to 26 per ent foreign direct equity participation in news media organizations although it has specified that editorial control must remain in the hands of the Indian partner.) Though divergent views have been expressed by journalists as well as owners of the newspaper industry on the question of FDI, Veerendrakumar candidly admitted that he was opposed to any foreign entry in the print media. The opinion of the working journalists and other workers of the industry should be clear and it should not be confined to the INS, he said. ...cont´d
