We recently spoke with one of the newsprint industry insiders and he confirmed that newsprint prices that were as high as US$920 a MT in December 2008 have declined to practically half this year. In the last two quarters imported newsprint prices in India have been around US$ 475. Although these prices seem lower than US$ 560 prices of 2007, bear in mind that the Indian Rupees was 39.70 to the dollar in those days. Nowadays the Indian Rupee is closer to 49 to a dollar. Last year when print advertising was hit badly the government reduced the 5 per cent customs duty to zero and significantly raised the government advertising rates through DAVP. ...cont´d
