How do we select a material or combination of materials and their grades and thickness for a packaging application? So far, we have discussed the basic principles involved in packaging and how barriers need to be provided to deliver the desired shelf life for any product. Here is a checklist to lay down the basic package requirements for products that 'spoil' (as opposed to products that need protection not from agencies of spoilage but only from damage due to their fragility - these have to be tackled differently): Lay down how the product spoils - e.g. by loss of crispness, rancidity, loss of flavour, loss of texture etc. ...cont´d
