Pragati unveils Futurewise calendar

February 03, 2010 | By the IPP Desk based on a press release

Pragati has a tradition of producing its corporate calendar to show its print quality and different print enhancement and finishing options. At a reception at the Asiad Tower Complex in New Delhi, the company unveiled this year’s calendar which has the theme “2010 Futurewise 2100”. The calendar was designed by Spirit Designs, a design studio from Gurgaon which also did the Pragati calendar for the year 2008, winning the SAPPI International Printer of the Year Award.

The Gregorian calendars for the year 2010 and the year 2100 being common, this calendar can still be used 90 years from now. “This strange coincidence is the inspiration behind the theme Futurewise”, designer Rajeev Gupta explained. Futurewise takes a look at what the world may be like in the year 2100. While on the one hand, rapidly changing technologies will lead to some amazing new inventions, on the other hand, our planet may be devoid of its flora, fauna and resources because of the consequences of global warming. All this has been visually translated on to six sheets of the calendar, each covering two months.

Pragati’s CEO Narendra Paruchuri commented: “We all have a responsibility to future generations to help insure that we are taking care of our planet so they have the same opportunities as we do. In this year’s calendar 2010 Futurewise 2100, we have not only used environment friendly materials and procedure to produce the calendar but also strongly conveyed every person on the planet has to collectively join the fight against global warming else our generations would live in an extinct land.” He added, “Printing as an industry is a heavy user of material based on natural resources such as paper. There are ways that printing companies can participate in helping to reduce their impact on the environment.”

Pragati Offset was established in 1962 and has since grown as a high quality commercial printer expanding its product offering to point-of-sales materials, packaging and labels. Based in Hyderabad, it has an office in the US and several offices across India. The company won the SAPPI International Printer of the Year award in 2006 and 2008, and is one of the few printers in India to be FSC certified, committed to the use of environmentally friendly materials and processes, from the use of soy-based inks to the appropriate disposal of waste.

“2010 Futurewise 2100” concept

Star Trek / January – February
NASA has announced plans to create a space elevator by the year 2100 that would enable travel to outer space. This would dramatically change the way we perceive space travel today, and perhaps even allow space tourism. This concept has been translated visually, and on the calendar you can actually move an astronaut, suspended on a string, into outer space from mother earth!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang / March – April
Work is already around the world to develop an eco-friendly vehicle that can not only ride fast but also fly in the sky or float on water using alternate fuels! This true multi-purpose vehicle reminds us of the famous work of fiction, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond and could be a reality in the future.

The Coral Island / May – June
Coral reefs are a very important marine feature and contain a huge range of bio diversity. They also sustain many aquatic life forms. Corals remain alive in stable temperatures and can die out with very minimal warming up of the seas. Global warming has already caused many reefs to die or whiten. Survival of the remaining reefs depends on how well we can control global warming. If left unchecked, by the year 2100, all of the world’s coral reefs would be dead and white.

The March of the Emperor / July – August
Two major penguin species, the King penguin and the Emperor penguin are in a high risk category and face possible extinction in the event of the snows of Antarctica melting down due to the consequences of global warming. Scientists and environmentalists are of the opinion that the glaciers of Antarctica, home to these penguins, will be gone by the year 2100 if the planet continues to warm up at the current rate.

Tyger, Tyger / September – October
The theme, based on William Blake’s famous poem, draws on the irony that tiger, the majestic beast of the forest, feared by one and all, is itself now in need of protection. Conservationists believe that the famed Bengal Tiger, a resident of the forests of India, as well as many other species of the tiger, face possible extinction by the year 2100 if corrective measures are not put into place to increase their fast diminishing population. On this calendar sheet, you can actually see the tiger image glow at night.

Mind Your Language / November – December
We are living in a highly urbanized society. Barriers of language are fast disappearing. However, it also means that by the year 2100, over half of the existing 6000 world languages would be extinct. Already, only 6 per cent of all world languages are spoken by 94 per cent of the global population. Similar would be the fate of most world cultures.
