If the new Chairman of Press Council of India, retired Supreme Court judge Justice MarkandayKatju had his way, the near-defunct, almost forgotten government body which is supposed to act as a regulator of print media, will acquire draconian powers. The electronic media, so far free of any government control or regulation, will also come under its purview and it will get the power to suspend government advertisements of television channels which continue to play truant in matters of airing ‘objectionable’ content despite warning. ...cont´d
