President Pratibha Patil inaugurates 62nd World Newspaper Congress in Hyderabad

1 December 2009 – The 62nd World Newspaper Congress, attended by more than 900 participants from 87 countries, was inaugurated today at the Hyderabad International Convention Center. The opening ceremony was addressed by Honourable Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, President of India; T. Venkattraman Reddy, President, Indian Newspaper Society; Gavin O’ Reilly, President, WAN-IFRA; Dr. J. Geeta Reddy, Minister for Tourism, Culture & I&PR, Government of Andhra Pradesh; Pratap G. Pawar, Mohan Jatua; Dr. K. Rosaiah; and Xavier Vidal-Folch, President, World Editors Forum. Press freedom is a widely discussed issue in the forum this year. The inaugural session was followed by a short film showing the number of journalists who are killed, murdered and assaulted in different parts of the world. ...cont´d
