20 per cent duty to be imposed on imported uncoated and coated paper

News reports indicate that on 24 April 2009 that the Director General Safeguards has recommended the imposition of a provisional safeguard duty of 20 per cent on all imports of uncoated paper and copy paper into India. The Indian Paper Mills Association (IPMA) had filed the application seeking the safeguard duty on uncoated and copy papers made primarily from virgin pulp. The application was supported by a large number of paper manufacturers. The duty imposition will reduce the threat to domestic manufacturers’ as the final price of imported paper will increase. To some extent this is seen by the industry as protection for the new paper production capacity commissioned locally since the beginning of the year. However some of the Indian mills have assured export only units that prices of supplies to them will not be increased. ...cont´d
