Marathi book printing and publishing has a history of about 200 years. The first Marathi book printed in the Devnagari script was published in 1805 AD at Serampore near Kolkata. Marathi books were first printed and published in Mumbai twenty years later in the third decade of the nineteenth century. For nearly a century after that, Marathi book publishing was primarily used by social and political leaders as a means of enlightening and awakening the people. There were some exceptions -- particularly some printer-publishers like Ganpat Krishnaji, Javaji Dadaji (Nirnaysagar), Gondhalekar (Jagadhitechhu) and others. ...cont´d
