At the Jaipur Literary Festival earlier this year, the financiers, the DSC group, announced a new literary award, the DSC prize for South Asian literature, which carries a purse of US$ 50,000 (approximately INR 22.5 lakhs). This year, the Vodafone Crossword award increased its categories — from fiction, non-fiction and translations — to include children’s writing. Even as this piece is being written, a fierce discussion is raging on the Internet about whether or not the well known Indian writer Amitav Ghosh should accept the Dan Davin award from Tel Aviv University, which carries a purse of US$ 1 million (approximately INR 4.5 crore) and which Ghosh would share, were he to take it, with Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. ...cont´d
