Today, we live in a world of standards. Each of us benefits from standards every time we swipe a credit card or use an electrical appliance. When the International Standards Organization (ISO) conducted an inventory of active standards at the beginning of 2011, the tally came to 18,536 standards. During 2010 alone, 100,000 experts collaborated to produce 1,313 new standards. For this much effort to be spent, there must be a compelling reason for developing standards. But what is it? ...cont´d
