The Indian manufacturers of single width single circumference web offset presses have been fueling the growth of the newspaper. The Indian manufacturers of single width single circumference web offset presses have been fueling the growth of the newspaper industry since the 1980's. The Indian languages in particular have benefited from the advent of computerised typesetting, PostScript, and offset printing. From the 1990's onward, the book publishing industry also began printing school textbooks on web offset and this too strengthened local manufacturers. The largest concentration of web offset manufacturers in the country is in the Delhi national capital region with major manufacturers in Faridabad, Ballabgarh, Gurgaon and Noida. The most important exception is of course Manugraph, the leading manufacturer web offset manufacturer with its plants in Kohlapur.

In the last ten years, several major component manufacturers have begun manufacturing or support activities in the country which is a huge support to the strong export thrust of the web offset manufacturers. Chilling, circulation, and dosing systems including reverse osmosis plants are available from the likes of Shree Refrigeration and Baldwin India. Ink pumping systems are locally manufactured by Lincoln Helios, and Newstec, shaftless motors are made by Rexroth and Baumuller Kat, web guiding and registration systems by Erhardt and Leimer, pneumatic jacks are made by Festo. And now Megtec has come to India to supply autopasters.

KK Printing Machines
We recently met with KK Machines at their stand in Pamex. This was our first meeting after their having become the agents for Akiyama in the subcontinent. Akiyama is a leading Japanese manufacturer that is known for its J-type perfecting presses that are popular in both Japan and the US. Akiyama was acquired by a Chinese consortium several years ago but its manufacturing plant is still based in Tokyo, Japan. Recently we again visited KK Machines' factory in Faridabad and met its founder and managing director Sanjay Gupta. Started in 1983 the company continued to grow and has continued to invest in its plant, buildings, machine shops, and assembly capacity. In spite of the huge number of web offset manufacturers in the Faridabad area the company has risen above others in the area by developing new and higher products. (The road to Agra is paved with web offset press and component suppliers in the Fardidabad Ballabgarh area.)

Although the Indian publishing industry has been experiencing consistent high growth the press manufacturers have for the most part been in an extremely competitive situation. KK has nevertheless grown and has been able to invest in and install CNC based cutting tools in their machine component manufacturing for web offset printing machines. Thus KK is emerging as one of the larger and more organised players in an elite group of manufacturer exporters. The company was ISO 9001 certified in 1994 for design, manufacturing, and supply of web offset printing machines and allied products. KK's Ronald web offset machines are exported to CIS countries and Europe. Over 200 press elements are installed in these countries. The Ronald Super web offset presses offer modular construction and simple maintenance. The company has global network sales and service network in place that is also useful for press upgradation. The company's CNC machining centres have brought internationally accepted quality to the Ronald Super blanket-to-blanket units and folders. The Ronald 4-high towers allow full colour printing on both sides of the web in a very compact footprint. The press uses Sava blankets with the clamping bars for increased quality and consistency. KKPM's installations in the subcontinent include many of the well-known newspapers and book printers in India and Nepal including Dainik Bhaskar , Indian Express , Rajasthan Patrika , Dainik Jagran , Malai Malar , Gopsons Paper, Navbharat , Deshbhamani , and Kantipur . It has recently installed eight full 30,000 copies an hour lines at Punjab Kesri with 16 pages in full colour and two full lines at Andhra Prabha and Daily Thanthi in South India. Other installations include Agardoot , Sadin , Janmabhumi in the North East; Samaj , Sambad and Dharatri in Orrisa; and Satyajug in Kolkotta. In the North India, installations include Rajastahan Patrika in Rajastan, Dainik Jagran and Nai Duniya in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Also it has installed two 3-colour satellite units and stack unit at Andhra Prabha and in Jaico press, Samruddhi Enterprises in Mumbai. NBG to manufacture 35,000 and 45,000 cph presses
On a recent visit to NBG's plant in Ballabgarh we met with Nitin Garg and discussed the company's plans to manufacture new single width single circumference presses with speeds of 35,000 and 45,000 copies an hour. The new developments are aimed at meeting the increased demands for speed and colour printing by both newspapers and book publishers. NBG is particularly strong in the book publishing and printing market with their 560 mm and 578 cut-off presses. In fact, NBG has already delivered several presses with 35,000 cph capacity.

NBG started up in 1990 and began exporting web offset presses as early as 1991. The IS0 9000 quality certified manufacturer produces Star web offset presses single width presses with modular construction. The printing elements are mono blanket to blanket units and and also 3-colour satellite printing unit for printing full in combination with a mono unit on one side of the web. Four units can be stacked for a vertical web and printed in 4-colours on both sides.

NBG also manufactures small sheet fed offset presses in sizes from 10 x 15, 12 x 18, and 15 x 20 inches sizes. The chromed plate, blanket and impression cylinders of these  presses run on bearers. Stream feeders with push and pull type side lays and front lays are provided for smooth movement and registration. Missing and double sheet detectors with photo cells are provided for increased quality and efficiency.

Seems to me this is nothing more than the pot giving an interview about the kettle.
