January 14, 2009 | By Purva Sethi

HP organized a press conference at Bangalore on 9 Jan 2009 to announce the installation of the first HP Indigo 5500 installation in Karnataka at Kolor Kode and to strengthen their position in the digital press segment in the Southern market. Speaking on the occasion HP’s Puneet Chadha said, “the HP Indigo 5500 will help Kolor Kode to establish its position in the digital printing business by providing them the flexibility, quality and job capability and helping them explore newer business opportunities targeted both at businesses as well as customers.” With a few figures he explained that digital growth in any print segment worldwide exceeds the over all growth of the segment. According to Chadha, in the packaging segment the over all growth is 4 per cent and digital growth in the sector is 59 per cent. In the labels segment, over all growth is 4 per cent and digital growth is 45 per cent. Chadha added that with this installation, HP completes 52 installations of its Indigo machines across the country in the last two and a half years, although HP’s focus is not on the number of machines installed but how many prints can be generated with the machines.

Kolor Kode
We visited Kolor Kode and met Mr Kayu Dhanbhoora, the Director of the company. Kolor Kode was set up on 21 July 2008 with the installation of the HP Indigo 5500 and is an end to end provider of digital printing solutions. We asked Kayu why he chose an HP press. He believes the press is the best in the industry today. He said, “Digital offset printing systems like the HP Indigo at their facility are a perfect choice for smaller quantities, print on demand and tight deadlines. It is also ideal for commercial printers who want to switch to high quality digital colour printing as it helps customer’s streamline turn around times and offers a wide range of publishing solutions.” For security printing, the Indigo 5500 enables the customer to use  micro text.
Kolor Kode has an in house graphic designer. Their infrastructure includes a brand new Horizon binder, a lamination and a second-hand Polar cutting machine. They also have an Italian case maker for hard cover books and other products. Kayu plans to expand the company further by adding a medium format offset press and an automatic screen printer with UV. He said the company was not looking at getting into screen printing but the machine would be used for printing specialized textures on offset prints. The medium format press would also be mostly for his existing digital customers and maybe a very small percentage of jobs would be for new or customers external to what he sees as his ecosystem. Kolor Kode’ marketing team is headed by Esha Hasija.

When asked if Kolor Kode got any variable data printing jobs, Kayu said they had a few clients for whom they produced personalised calendars. Like other printers we have spoken to in the Southern market, Kayu said that the market has yet not taken to variable data printing and is not yet aware of its many advantages. He said to increase awareness about variable data printing in the market HP and Kolor Kode are planning to organize training sessions for customers. He said the pilot project will probably have 5-10 participants for starters and they would further expand the program depending on the response. Kayu’s establishment and the way he communicated show that he believes in the dedication and motivation of his people, in investing in the best technology, and maintaining a close day to day involvement with new ideas in the industry.
