There is a body of process control standards and tools which enable printers to match and maintain printing aims. For offset printers, the international ISO 12647-2 standard provides an implementation and certification framework to obtain more consistent colours and overall print quality, issues increasingly being demanded by international print buyers. Printing according to standard, incorporating the criteria formulated in ISO 12647, is the next level Indian printers will have to achieve. Wherever implemented, the understanding and application of process standards for offset printing is resulting in quality improvements and process consistency. In turn, this is leading to improved customer relations, reputation and competitiveness particularly with international print buyers. By contrast, neglecting the consequences of international standards is resulting in strategic disadvantages and decreasing opportunities to serve international customers. Worldwide, ISO 12647-2 has become the norm for offset printing, and its application and certification a matter of standard requirement, if not survival.

IppStar is organising one-day intensives around the country to provide offset printers with a comprehensive understanding of the ISO 12647 standard and the implications of its implementation. The interactive workshops with presentations by members of ISO’s standard-setting TC 130 committee are aimed at technical and management personnel of printing companies seeking to standardise print quality in order to be more competitive in the global market. They will learn what the standard consists of, why it should be applied, what the implementation and certification process entails, how long it will take, and which prerequisites, costs and benefits are to be expected. Presenters at the workshop include Mr Erwin Widmer, MD of UGRA, the Swiss Center of Competence for Media and Printing Technology; Mr Alan Dresch, Founder and Senior Consultant at Mellow Color Ltd and a member of TC 130 from the UK; Mr Supree Thongpetch, MD of Colour Doctor Ltd in Thailand, TC 130 member and UGRA/FOGRA certified Print Standard Consultant; and Mr Yan Wei Phin, GMG Regional Technical Services Manager and UGRA/FOGRA Partner based in Malaysia.
IppStar expects that more than 50% of the attending printers will be influenced by interactively taking part in the Monsoon Summit to improve their understanding of the detailed standards necessary to maintain consistent print quality. A significant number of participants will implement ISO 12647-2 process standardisation and certification within the next year. The costs of participation in the event, which will be supported by major advocates in the industry, are Rupees 5,000 inclusive of service tax, payable to IPP Services Training and Research Pvt. Ltd. Delegates will receive a kit containing documentation of the Monsoon Summit intensives as well as in-depth background materials.
